Introducing Chief Chilly.

Introducing Chief Chilly.

Chief Chilly Challenge is a level only appearing in Super Mario 64 DS, in the mirror room. It can only be entered by Luigi, because only he gets invisible when using a Power Flower and can go through the mirror and enter the Wario painting. Upon its completion, he gets the key to unlock Wario, the last playable character.

The Path

The path leading up to the actual battle is reminiscent of the Bowser boss fight levels. One major hindrance though is that the entire course is icy. You can also earn two stars here one for the 8 red coins and one for smashing the box due left of the junction (as Wario (Luigi in a Wario cap)). You start out on top of a slide, ride it down and take the updraft. There will be shaky platforms crossing to an icy patch. Then take the Tram platform over to the next area. Next is a high-up jump to the pond below. (Don't stay in too long as it will chop away health, much like the ones in Snowman's Land). When you get to a junction, head right (or if as Wario get the Power Flower first and head left where you can get an extra star). The ice blocks move in and out and intersect navigate these and head into the pit for the battle.

The Battle

To defeat Chief Chilly, you will need to use a series of ground pounds, punches, kicks, and the especially effective slide kicks to knock him in the icy water. With every hit, Chief Chilly will bounce around the outsides of the arena chipping off each corner. The process must be repeated. After two hits, Chief Chilly will take off larger chunks of the ice platform causing it to become unstable and then sink a bit into the water. Just as before, knock him in again, before the final below, Chief Chilly will try to stabilize himself but just run into him to knock him into the icy water forcing him to surrender and give up the key.

Dialogue

An interesting thing to note is that the Chief Chilly's opening monologue depends on the character (cap) you are wearing.

Basically the mechanics are the same with all "bully" battles except Chief Chilly has 3 HP so you will have to repeat the process three times (tip: Like most Super Mario 64 DS bully battles this is much easier as Wario (in this case Luigi with a Wario cap)).

Stars

There are 2 Stars located in this course

Star 1: The Black Box

You will need Wario for this Star, grab the Power Flower from the ? Block and run left and through the wind (which won't be able to blow you off due to the metal) and then punch open the black box with Wario's strength and obtain the Star inside. To get back, hit the ? Block by the black box to run through the wind back to the other side.

Star 2: 8 Red Coins

There are 8 Red Coins located in this course, below are their locations.

  1. On the moving mesh platform near the beginning, jump on the platform and grab the Red Coin as it moves.
  2. In the air, jump off the edge of the platform (near the black box Star) and the Red Coin is located in the air along with many Coins. Propel yourself up there with the wind's help and grab the Red Coin.
  3. Below the second Red Coin is a freezing pond where the third Red Coin is located. Quickly grab it and get out of the freezing water.
  4. In the pen with the mob of Bullies, grab the Red Coin and escape (or defeat) the Bullies.
  5. On the first of the shifting icy platforms.
  6. Near the end of the shifting icy platform section.
  7. Inside a cage. Grab a Power Flower from a nearby ? Block and race back to the cage to grab the 7th Red Coin.
  8. On an isolated ice island in the distance. Use Mario's balloon powers from the Power Flower and float to the island to grab the 8th Red Coin.

After all 8 Red Coins have been obtained, the Star will appear in a small pen near the course's end.
