Cheep Chomps[1] (originally parsed Cheep-Chomps[2][3]) are Cheep Cheeps that are bigger than usual and are first found in underwater levels in New Super Mario Bros. They closely resemble a Boss Bass, and much like them, they attempt to eat Mario. Cheep Chomps are usually depicted with having a purple body, a white underbelly, large pink lips, and cyan fins.
History
Super Mario series
New Super Mario Bros.
In New Super Mario Bros., if Mario or Luigi swim too close to the Cheep Chomp, it follows him, opens its mouth, and tries to eat him. If they eat players, they lose an extra life, regardless of their condition. They can be defeated, like all other fish, with a Fireball, as Mega Mario/Luigi, or the Starman's invincibility effects. Only three appear in the entire game, all of them appearing in the same level: World 3-1.
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
A Cheep Chomp in a sub-area of World 4-4 in New Super Mario Bros. Wii
In New Super Mario Bros. Wii, only two Cheep-Chomps appear: one is in a sub-area of World 4-4, and another is in a sub-area of World 9-2. A fireball or Star can defeat Cheep-Chomps, but they are invulnerable to ice balls from Ice Mario. Two changes are made from New Super Mario Bros.: it is distinctly larger, being the largest Cheep Cheep in the game, and defeating it releases three 1-Up Mushrooms.
The Prima guide for this game incorrectly refers to the Cheep-Chomp as a Porcupuffer.[4]
New Super Mario Bros. 2

Cheep Chomps (parsed with a space instead of a hyphen for the first time) once again appear in New Super Mario Bros. 2. One makes its first appearance early in World 1-5. They reappear as common enemies in World 4-5. Another appears in course one of the Impossible Pack, near two whirlpools. Like in the previous game, they are the largest Cheep Cheeps, being about 3 1/4 times as large as normal Cheep Cheeps. They now release three coins when defeated.
New Super Mario Bros. U / New Super Luigi U / New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe
A Cheep Chomp in Swim for Your Life in New Super Mario Bros. U
Cheep Chomps reappear in New Super Mario Bros. U, New Super Luigi U, and New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe. While they behave largely the same as before, they now have the ability to defeat any enemy they collide with, such as Urchins and Spiny Cheep Cheeps, a mechanic prominently utilized in the levels where they appear. Cheep Chomps are encountered in Swim for Your Life! in New Super Mario Bros. U and in the levels Cheep Chomp Chase and Star Coin Deep Dive in New Super Luigi U. Much like a Porcupuffer, a Cheep Chomp respawns shortly after being defeated. They also require three hits from a fireball to be defeated, rather than one as in earlier titles. Cheep Chomps are the only type of enemy capable of defeating Nabbit.
Super Mario Maker 2
In Super Mario Maker 2, a Cheep Chomp makes a cameo in the background of underwater levels in the New Super Mario Bros. U style, appearing for a brief period of time before swimming away. Their behavior is instead given to Porcupuffer while underwater in the Super Mario 3D World style.
Paper Mario: Sticker Star
The Cheep Chomp chasing Mario at Long Fall Falls.
A giant Cheep Chomp (also called a Big Cheep Chomp by Prima Games[5]) appears in Paper Mario: Sticker Star as an obstacle. The Cheep Chomp appears to be made of cardboard, featuring a propeller-like tail. It can be seen on the surface of the water in Long Fall Falls, pursuing Mario on his raft down the river.
The Cheep Chomp leaps out of the water, and it attempts to destroy Mario's raft by either charging or dive bombing onto it. The Cheep Chomp may recharge its propeller periodically, which gives Mario some more time to escape from it. If the Cheep Chomp charges directly at Mario or lands directly on top of him, it eats Mario, resulting in an instant Game Over. If the Cheep Chomp destroys all five logs of Mario's raft, this also produces a Game Over. When both reach a waterfall, Mario and his raft continue to fall, while the Cheep Chomp's "propeller" ends up propelling it upward, into space. The chase can be redone as many times as desired. If the player returns to the level after collecting the Comet Piece that unlocks Chomp Ruins, the Cheep Chomp acts a lot more aggressive.
Mario Party series
Mario Party: Island Tour
Cheep Chomps in Cheep Diamonds in Mario Party: Island Tour
Cheep Chomps appear in Mario Party: Island Tour in the minigame Cheep Diamonds and Starring Artist. In Cheep Diamonds, they swallow a number of diamonds and then circle around in the water. The Cheep Chomps shuffle around each turn, and the players have to try and choose which one swallowed the most diamonds.
Mario Party 10
In Mario Party 10, an enlarged Cheep Chomp named Mega Cheep Chomp is fought as a boss in its own mini-game, Mega Cheep Chomp's Shell Shock. As a species, Cheep Chomps do not appear, although Cheep Cheeps are encountered during the mini-game.
Super Mario Party
Mechanical Cheep Chomps in Feeding Friendsy
In Super Mario Party, Cheep Chomps can appear in the Rattle and Hmmm minigame, alongside a Torpedo Ted and a Dragoneel. Feeding Friendsy also contains mechanical Cheep Chomps that the players must throw balls into. They also appear in the background of Mushroom Beach.
Mario Party Superstars
A Cheep Chomp appears in the Mario Party Superstars version of Yoshi's Tropical Island, taking over Bubba's role from the original game. When someone lands on an Event Space, the Cheep Chomp swallows Toadette, who has the Star, and takes her to the other side of the board, spitting her out in Bowser's former location as Bowser switches spots with her. The game refers to this segment as "Cheep Chomp's Trick".
After a game on Yoshi's Tropical Island is finished, more Cheep Chomps appear, eating and taking away all of the players except for the winner.
Mario Golf: Super Rush
In Mario Golf: Super Rush, Cheep Chomps appear at Shelltop Sanctuary.

Other appearances
Cheep Chomps, alongside Cheep Cheeps, Eep Cheeps, and Bloopers, appeared in Fishing Tourney #12 in Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp as the largest fish that could be caught, due to the tourney being held around the same time as Mario Day. A Cheep Chomp balloon attached to a Brick Block could also be obtained as special furniture when the player reached the 2,900, 3,100, 3,300, 3,600, or 4,100 cm milestone. Although they are depicted with their trademark closed eyes in the scenes where they are caught by the player, their icon depicts them with open eyes similar to Cheep Cheeps and Eep Cheeps.
