Shell Mario and Shell Luigi[1] (also known as Koopa Mario and Koopa Luigi) is a power-up which first appears in New Super Mario Bros.
Description
Mario or Luigi can become his Shell form by wearing a Blue Shell. While the appearance is consistent, the abilities of Shell Mario are different entirely from New Super Mario Bros. to Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, though both involve entering the shell in some form. Super Mario 3D World references Shell Mario's abilities by giving the player the ability to enter shells briefly.
New Super Mario Bros.
The main ability of Shell Mario or Shell Luigi is the Shell Dash, which involves him sliding around in his shell, which can be done automatically by either running briefly or crouching on a downward slope, helping him to defeat enemies (excluding Whomps) and break Brick Blocks. Both Triple Jumps and Double Jumps are harder for Shell Mario to perform because the consecutive jumps before Shell Mario is forced into his shell.
Shell Mario has some other abilities. He can swim faster, like Frog Mario in Super Mario Bros. 3, and Mario can also duck into the shell, like Hammer Mario, another power-up from said game. Shell Mario is safe from most attacks while ducking except Bob-omb explosions, Spiked Balls, hammers thrown by Hammer Bros. or Sledge Bros., boomerangs from Boomerang Bros., and the volcanic debris from World 8-8. If Shell Mario falls into water while spinning, he begins to swim. Shell Mario can change to any other power-up by touching its item, except the lower tier Super Mushroom,
Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story
In the skies of Toad Town, after Mario or Luigi strikes the first Shell Block there, the Koopa Paratroopa Trio arrive to explain Blue Shells and the resulting Shell form. Mario is the only character who can become his Shell form. Shell Mario wears a heavy Blue Shell, so if he jumps while wearing it, he loses the shell.
On the field, Shell Mario can be hit by Luigi's hammer, causing Shell Mario to spin a short, straight distance before returning to his starting position. Shell Mario is required to hit certain blocks and levers that are unreachable otherwise.
