The Seedle is an enemy from Mario & Luigi: Brothership. They are common on Rumbla Island, but can also be found in Conductor Island.

Description

Seedles are yellow plant-like monsters with two brown feet and a green sprout on top. Their face includes two black dots for eyes and nothing else.

Behaviour

Seedles generally wander around their territory with nothing to draw their attention, but will chase after any intruders in their territory upon being disturbed.

Combat

Whenever it attacks, a Seedle will charge into its target. This attack must be avoided by jumping. Seedles can also throw coconuts at their target; this must also be jumped over.

A Seedle has 13 hit points with an attack power of 5, a defense of 8, and a speed of 10 on Conductor Island. On Rumbla Island, this jumps up to 17 hit points, an attack power of 9, a defense of 5, and a speed of 10. A defeated Seedle gives 1 Experience Point and a single Coin, sometimes along with, on Rumbla Island, a Mushroom, a 1-Up Mushroom, a Rumbla Stone, and a Seedle Seed.

A Battle Plug called "Seedle-ize" can cause foes that get attacked to pop, leaving behind a Seedle. Occasionally, this Seedle will be gold. These "Golden Seedles" have the same health, attack power, and speed as the Rumbla Island Seedle, but they have a defense of 1000. Their defeat gives 4000 experience and 2000 coins, with a chance to drop a Seedle Seed, although as compensation, encountering them is rare.

Variants and Related Enemies

Stronger variants of Seedles can be found later in the game.

Seedle R

Seedle R's are a green variant with stronger stats and the ability to increase other enemies' Speed, but their attacks are identical to those of regular Seedles. They inhabit Florall Island. Seedle R's are of Level 8, with 34 hit points, an attack power of 29, a defense of 18, and a speed of 36. Upon defeat, they give 7 experience, 8 coins, and possibly a jar of Syrup (3%), a regular Candy (1%), and/or a Seedle Seed (9%).

Hydro Seedle

Hydro Seedles are blue Seedles that can also be found on Florall Island and on Liil Islet. They can attack their prey by throwing a coconut or spinning into their target; both must be jumped over. Their trademark ability, however, is to counter damage by spraying water from their leaves onto their allies, though this requires them to wait a few turns to charge this water up.

On Florall Island, the Hydro Seedle is of Level 9 with 38 hit points, an attack power of 32, a defense of 20, and a speed of 39. When slain, it gives 8 experience and 9 coins, otherwise having the same loot drops as a Seedle R. On Liil Islet, the Hydro Seedle has its level increased to 16 and its health increased to 76, giving 42 experience and 16 coins when slain.

Glohm-infected Seedles

During the Reclusa World chapter of the game, Seedles and their variants contract Glohm, a dangerous virus-esque substance that forbids victims from forming friendships. Their behaviour is largely the same, but Seedle R's lose their ability to bestow boosts to Speed, while Hydro Seedles lose their ability to heal their allies, and all versions can pass on this infection through contact. Additionally, when destroyed, the body will remain on the screen before exploding, creating a wave of fire that must be dodged.

A regular Seedle infected with Glohm is of Level 39 with 577 hit points, giving 794 experience and 120 coins when destroyed. Seedle R's become Level 39 with 433 hit points with their destruction giving 595 experience and 90 coins. Hydro Seedles become level 40 with 413 hit points, granting 636 experience and 95 coins when destroyed.

Seedlusa

There is an even stronger monster called Seedlusa that can be found in the Soli-Tree and mimics actual Seedles. These enemies are silver in colour, with cable-like sprouts where one would expect leaves. As a whole, they resemble Reclusa. Seedlusas cowardly and are highly likely to flee despite their strength; this cowardice extends to the overworld, which features them attempting to flee from intruders. If only one remains, it will summon a flower monster as it burrows into the ground to escape.

Behind the Scenes

Seedles take their design from seeds, with the name being a pun on "seed" and possibly "little." Hydro Seedles have the same etymology for the "Seedle" part of their name, with the word "hydro" coming from the Greek word húdōr ("water"; written ῠ̔́δωρ) as a reference to how they use water to heal their allies.

Nomenclature

In Japanese, Seedles have the name Naebō (written ナエボー), from nae ("seedling"; written 苗 in Kanji, なえ in Hiragana, and ナエ in Katakana) and Kuribō (the Japanese name of the Goomba, written クリボー). Their Chinese name is Miáobǎo, which comes from a calque of the Japanese name and is written 苗宝; Miáo (written 苗) means "seedling," with Lì Bǎobao (written 栗宝宝, or 栗寶寶 traditionally; literally "Chestnut Baby") being the Goomba's Chinese name in the traditional script. Spanish calls them "Milla," from a clipping of semilla ("seed"), with Portuguese calling the creature Sementina, from semente ("seed"). In Italian, their name is Pjantagránia, from pjantagrane ("troublemaker"). In French, they are called "Bulbet" (from bulbe ("Bulb") and the diminutive suffix -et, though beste ("stupid") could be another influence). German translates their name as Knomba, from Knospe ("bulb") and Gumba ("goomba").

Seedle R's have the same names their weaker counterparts have, albeit with the letter R (or Āru (written either アアル or アール) in the case of Japanese) after their name.

Hydro Seedles are referred to as "Water Seedles" in the Japanese (Mizu Naebō; written 水 ナエボー), Chinese (Shuǐ Miáobǎo; written 水苗宝), and Korean dubs (Mul Saessakba; written 물 새싹바). Their name is directly translated in the Spanish, Portuguese, and Italian dubs, but the former two fuse the words into a single world, resulting in Hidromilla and Hidrossementina, respectively, while Italian leaves them separated, resulting in Piantagránia Idro. French translates the name as Bulb'eau, derived from a portmanteau of Bulbet (the regular Seedle's French name) and eau ("water"). In German, the enemy is called "Aquanomba," derived from a portmanteau of the Latin word aqua ("water") and Knomba (the regular Seedle's German name).
